At her recent birthday concert, Karla did something unexpected. She turned her celebration into a moment of honest reflection. She preached about Palm Sunday and the difference between praising Jesus for what He can do versus loving Him for who He is.

She said:
“You can celebrate Jesus publicly and still reject him privately. We know how to post scriptures. We know how to sing songs. We know how to lift our hands when the bridge hits. We know how to get dressed and go to church. But there’s still not the whole surrender in our hearts.”

Then she asked a question that stopped the room:
“It is possible to have palm branches in your hands and still not have Him in your heart.”

She talked about how people often hide behind their gifts, how the most gifted people can be the most guilty. How we run to conferences and shout and sing, but forget to check our motives.

And then she turned to her own father. She thanked him publicly for sacrifices she never understood as a child. She said:

“Now that I’m older, I feel like the word thank you ain’t enough. Because you made some sacrifices that you ain’t even said out loud. And it’s because of your sacrifices that I’m able to praise God like this.”

That is the heart of Karla. She is not afraid to laugh. She is not afraid to cry. And she is not afraid to tell the truth.
